The guest artists have finally been selected and invited for Book of Pandora, so now...we're offering the chance for others we may have overlooked to contribute as well!

Contest Ended: September 15

The current layout plan for the artbook is:

:star: 8.5 inches wide x 11 inches tall

:star: approximately 50-56 pages

:star: full color

:star: soft-cover

Keep in mind that the length of the book may vary depending on how many artists participate, and that we may discuss whether the artbook will be hard-cover or soft-cover.

We do not know how many pages will be reserved for the contest, but since the length of the artbook isn't set in stone, we can modify it depending on the entries we receive!

:star:Contest Rules:

Please note that, to enter the contest, you do not need to be a member of the group! Only participating artists/judges are members of BookOfPandora. However, we encourage you to +Watch the group for updates!

:star: Your art must meet all the requirements listed below in Theme, Format and Submission.

:star: You may submit up to three pieces for the contest, but you can only win once.

:star: You must be able to sign a contract (download here), disregarding the terms involving previews.

:star: If you're already a guest artist, there is no need to enter the contest as there is already a spot reserved for you in the artbook!

Since Book of Pandora is a charity artbook with all profits to Doctors Without Borders (more information here), our theme is a gift of hope. One of the ways we are symbolizing this is through our mascot.

Our mascot is a blue box with silver stars; please read the description on this reference for more information. The idea is that this box will be fully closed at the beginning of the artbook, but as a reader flips through the pages, the box will open up
slowly until, at the end of the artbook, it becomes fully open.

If you are seeking to enter the contest you do not need to sign up for a degree of box openness, but it is advised that you look at the sign up list here and pick a degree of openness that hasn't been done too many times already.

To incorporate the overarching theme of this artbook, art should meet these requirements:

:star: must be positive (hopeful, inspiring) or at least neutral (not negative in any way)

:star: must include our mascot (see this reference for information)

:star: must include at least one subject (human or animal) (no fanart)

:star: must be newly created just for this artbook

Note that the mascot box does not need to be the focus of the art piece; it can be placed in the background as long as it is still visible! Incorporate it in any creative way you can think of! Try not to make a landscape picture, though.

Since Pandora's tale is a myth, fantasy (mythical creatures, surreal settings) are allowed, as are things from our daily lives. But please don't include any copyrighted characters (basically, no fanart).

Otherwise, you can do pretty much anything as long as it meets the requirements! Feel free to contact chameleonskyes (email or Note) to clarify anything or discuss any ideas.

Medium: Traditional art or digital art, in color

Size: 8.5 x 11 inches, 300 dpi (or higher)

1. Submit your finished picture on deviantArt. In your artist description, include:

:star: name you want to use in the artbook

:star: country

:star: something indicating that the picture was drawn for Book of Pandora, which is a charity artbook for Doctors Without Borders

:star: a statement indicating that you will be able to sign the contract if you win

2. Submit your work to the appropriate folder in BookOfPandora.

These are the confirmed judges who will select which artists will have their work published in Book of Pandora. We are currently discussing how to select more judges for this contest; details will come later.

Hi quick question referring to the size of the entry.  Does the above size include the recommended bleeding area for print??
chameleonskyes Featured By Owner Sep 3, 2013  Student Traditional Artist
Hmmm, no, it does not! Thanks for mentioning the bleeding area, though, I will have to ask a publishing company about that. ^^

Oh i see bleed is something that the artist's have to make sure is included in their page, otherwise the image once trimmed after printing
might not reach perfectly to the edge of the page and you could end up with un-printed white space in some parts. :)

I just recently did a page for a fanbook and this was the website i used to make sure i had the correct file size including the bleed area --->…

Anyways I hope to get my entry done within the next week.  :)

Okayyy I have another question.
You said we can't use fanart, okay good.
But what about our own copyrighted characters?

Do we have a create a new character for the contest and enter them, or can we use a pre-existing character of ours, In the contest entry?
chameleonskyes Featured By Owner Aug 29, 2013  Student Traditional Artist
Uhhh, we prefer you to draw up a random character or a new character, but as long as your OC can be a stand-alone character (as in, not a Harry Potter fancharacter or something) then that could work?

Oh! Okay, ^^ WOW thank you:heart:
That clarifies alot.

Uh I've got some questions! ; v ;

1. I am 16 years old (17 in two months) so, I guess I am not able to sign a contract? ;; Though, if necessary my mother could sign, is that allowed?

2. Do we have to submit our entries to deviantART? I'd prefer to upload it in my stash. and send it to the group via note because I like the idea of the drawing not being published before the book is out u v u

3. Do you already have an idea about how many winners there will approximately be?

Sorry to bother you ; u ;
chameleonskyes Featured By Owner Aug 26, 2013  Student Traditional Artist
1. Yes! Your parents should be able to sign your contract for you, so don't worry if you're under 18.

2. Hmm, for the contest I would prefer it to be uploaded to deviantArt, since it helps spread the word for our contest as well ^^;
However, if you really do not want to drawing shown before publication, you should at least upload part of your picture to deviantArt as a preview, though that usually is reserved exclusively to guest artists...

3. At the moment, not really, since we're still waiting on the guest artists to reply. I'd say at least half a dozen, though!

Thanks for your interest! :heart:

Huh... Sorry I've got a question! ^^'

When you say "please don't include any copyrighted characters (basically, no fanart)", does it mean that (copyrighted) OC's are not allowed? Can we just do random characters or OC's are allowed?

Thanks for reading! ^^
chameleonskyes Featured By Owner Aug 25, 2013  Student Traditional Artist
So...what exactly do you means by copyrighted OC's? ^^;

Random characters should definitely be fine, though!
